Fresh Turmeric: The Real Golden Root

Snap a fresh turmeric root in half and the inside is startling — a wet, vivid orange that stains fingers on contact. It's the same plant as the yellow powder in your cupboard, but the two behave differently once they hit a bottle. The fresh root is what actually earns turmeric its reputation.

Curcumin, and its bioavailability problem

Turmeric's headline compound is curcumin — the active behind most of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant research that keeps this ingredient in the news. It has one well-documented weakness: on its own, your body barely absorbs it. Most of a curcumin dose passes straight through, unused.

The black pepper trick

Piperine, the compound that makes black pepper hot, blocks the liver enzymes that normally break curcumin down. A pinch of pepper alongside fresh turmeric can lift curcumin absorption by up to 2000% in some studies. Every Shot Club bottle has just enough — a whisper on the finish that you'll notice if you're looking for it, and won't if you're not.

Why freshness matters more than dose

Curcumin is heat-sensitive and light-sensitive. Powdered turmeric loses potency slowly on the shelf, and pasteurised shots lose more in the pasteuriser than they had to begin with. Cold-pressing a fresh root and freezing the bottle the same day is the shortest path from plant to bloodstream, and it's the version that tastes and works like turmeric is meant to.

"Fresh turmeric doesn't taste yellow. It tastes earthy, warm, faintly bitter, and slightly peppery. That's the flavour of a compound that hasn't been cooked out."

What one Shot Club shot delivers

  • Around 8g of raw turmeric root, cold-pressed.
  • A working curcumin dose — not a decorative dusting.
  • Piperine from real black pepper, not an extract.
  • Zero preservatives, zero colouring, zero citric acid.

That's the version we wanted. That's the version we make.
